Missed the Kravis Prize internship fair? Don’t worry, there’s still time to make an impact next summer!

Strong turnout marked the recent Kravis Prize Internship Fair, which opened its doors to CMC freshmen, sophomores, and juniors interested in summer internships at home and abroad with several Prize recipients. The internship fair also sparked student interest across the 7Cs to learn more about the College’s Kravis Prize, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2015. On Thursday, Dec. 4, KLI’s Sherylle Tan and CMC’s Alia Kate and Karan Saggi ’14 welcomed interested undergraduates to learn more about upcoming Prize internship opportunities.  The Kravis Prize internships, both domestic and international, will offer students a valuable chance to receive work experience in various development sectors (including micro-finance, education, public health, and women empowerment). Students also had a chance to talk to past interns Anthony Contreras ’15, Alexandra Ruark ’15, Juetzinia Kazmer ’15, and Samantha LaPierre ’15 about their experiences and hear more about what it’s like to work on the front-lines of the non-profit, social impact sector. The Kravis Prize recognizes extraordinary leaders in the nonprofit sector with a $250,000 prize, celebrates their accomplishments, and shares their best practices with others. For CMCers, the Prize also provides summer internships with Prize recipient organizations around the world. Internships with partner organizations challenge interns with meaningful responsibility and leadership development as well as expose the student intern to organizational leadership dynamics. The following internships are available for summer 2015: BRAC USA (New York), Helen Keller International (New York), Right to Play (Canada and one country in Africa TBD), Escuela Nueva (Colombia), FAWE (Tanzania), INJAZ Al-Arab (Jordan), and Pratham (India). ‘He is a pilot, she is cooking’: FAWE combats schoolbook gender bias

Educational materials in Kenyan classrooms still portray old stereotypes of “boys as heroes and girls as weak,” says the executive director of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE). “The current methods of teaching carry a lot of gender bias to the boy,” FAWE Executive Director Hendrina Doroba told the Kenyan newspaper The Star in a recent interview. Doroba outlined the efforts of FAWE, which is the 2008 recipient of the Henry R. Kravis Prize in Nonprofit Leadership, to empower school-age girls across the African continent.  That includes depictions of women in picture- and textbooks, which FAWE has been able to address thanks to several successful partnerships. “We engaged with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development … vigorously and they looked at removing some of the pictures and set up a committee to ensure books are gender responsive,” Doroba explained. The organization has also teamed up with teachers to “improve their gender pedagogical skills” as well as their awareness and compassion for the circumstances of young female students. Founded in 1992, FAWE’s mission has been to educate and empower an estimated 24 million school-age women in sub-Saharan Africa.  Over the past 22 years, FAWE has expanded its operations into 32 African countries.  Despite the organization’s progress, however, Doroba acknowledged that there is still much work to do, many obstacles to confront that are not always obvious.  Schoolbook gender bias, for example, can be very subtle even though it leads to more disruptive situations, including school-related gender violence, she said. Say you find an old dollar bill in a pair of jeans … where does that dollar end up? Paying for your morning coffee? Carefully deposited in your bank account? What is the best way to invest a single dollar? Melissa Warnke, author of “Bang for Your Buck,” an article featured on The Morning News, interviews two dozen people—from a street performer to a head fund manager—about how they would invest a single dollar. Rena Singer, Communications Director of Landesa, a Rural Development Institute founded by Kravis Prize recipient Roy Prosterman, weighs in on the question. Singer outlines the way a dollar goes through Landesa’s Girls Project, a program which educates girls in West Bengal about “their rights to attend school, to not be married as a child, and to one day inherit land.” The project teaches girls the gardening skills needed to create and sustain a home—“a kitchen garden…roof of their house…food that boosts nutrition.” The program is a mere dollar per girl per year. Landesa was also recently named NGO of the Month by Funds for NGO’s. The organization is commended for their work to secure land for the world’s poorest populations and for their inspiring vision of “a world free of extreme poverty,” a vision which earned Prosterman the Kravis Prize in 2006. For FAWE in Rwanda, 1,200 is a magic number

Why is 1,200 a magic number? Because it refers to all of the young Rwandan women from vulnerable families who will have a chance to finish their schooling thanks to a project co-created by the Rwandan Chapter of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE). The 2008 recipient of the Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership, FAWE started in the early 1990s when the female ministers of education in five African countries decided that more education advocacy was needed on behalf of women across the continent. FAWE’s inception in five countries has grown to 32 African countries today. This month FAWE’s Rwanda chapter in collaboration with the Canadian MasterCard Foundation has launched The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Programme to enable as many as 1,200 schoolgirls to continue their educations through the elementary, secondary, and university levels. Already, in the weeks since the scholars program began, some 200 school-age women have been enrolled in the program, according to a report featured in The New Times of Kigali. Eugénie Mukanoheli, the Rwanda chapter’s coordinator, said a similar project will soon be operating in Ethiopia as well. “The idea is to keep as many girls as possible in school,” she told The New Times. “The scholars will have everything they need to study comfortably… but the beneficiaries must be schoolgirls who are academically bright but from vulnerable families.” When the new program is fully operational, organizers plan to identify potential candidates across the country, including at least ten selected high schools. *** In a related story: 15 girls in a FAWE secondary school in Sierra Leone have also received scholarship assistance that will ensure...

BBVA goes to Pratham; Kravis Prize honors 10th recipient in its ninth year

Knowledge that can radically change lives is a potent form of knowledge that cuts across categories and barriers — that’s been the key to Pratham’s success for more than 20 years, and it’s also the reason why the Mumbai-based organization and 2010 Kravis Prize recipient has been selected for a 2013 Frontiers of Knowledge Award from  the BBVA Foundation. The BBVA Foundation, which serves as the charitable arm of the banking organizations Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria,  has announced the selection of eight 2013 laureates, including Pratham, which has been honored for “their originality, theoretical significance and ability to push back the frontiers of the known world.” The award includes a cash prize of €400,000 (approx. $570,000). While biologist Christopher Field was awarded for his work on climate change and British biochemist Adrian Bird for his discoveries in epigenetics, Pratham was honored for its educational work with disadvantaged children in the award category of “development cooperation.” “Pratham has expanded the scope of education in resource-constrained areas,” the BBVA jury announced in a prepared statement. “It has done so through two significant innovations: the creation of simple, accurate and reliable tools for communities to assess learning; and a process that uses scientific evidence to develop new cost-effective programs that drastically improve learning levels.” Though Pratham has been in operation in India since 1994, its profile outside the country remained relatively low until the awarding of the Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership in 2010.
