What are you doing next summer? Since 2006, the Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership has been building a special community among its recipients, whose premier organizations are dedicated to improving the lives of millions of people around the globe. That community also extends to Claremont McKenna College’s students, who will have a chance to learn about working with past Prize recipients in the summer of 2015 during the Kravis Prize Internship Fair, which will be held this Thursday afternoon, December 4, 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., in the Freeberg Lounge. Find out about Kravis Prize internships offered both domestically by BRAC USA and Helen Keller International (both in New York City) and internationally by Right To Play, Escuela Nueva, FAWE, Pratham, and INJAZ Al-Arab (Canada, Colombia, Tanzania, India, and Jordan, respectively). The internship program, which is the result of a partnership between the Kravis Prize and the Kravis Leadership Institute at CMC, has enabled CMCers like Carolyn Islam ’16 (pictured above during her internship last summer with BRAC in Dhaka) to receive firsthand experience in problem-solving and applied entrepreneurship as it’s practiced by leaders in the non-profit sector. Students attending Thursday’s internship fair will receive additional internship details, information about the application process, and also have a chance to listen to the stories of classmates who have already participated in this singular internship program. “Without quality education, nothing can be achieved,” says Vicky Colbert, founder/director of Escuela Nueva, in a video honoring her selection as the 2013 recipient of the Wise Prize for Education. Colbert, who received the Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership in 2011, was chosen because of her organization’s long efforts to improve education in Colbert’s native Colombia. Kravis Prize founders Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis ’67 visited the CMC campus yesterday to present the 2013 Kravis Prize to Johann Olav Koss and his organization Right To Play. They presented the award to Koss during an evening ceremony held in the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum (see photograph below). Click here to read a full update on the ceremony. The award ceremony wasn’t the only item on the day’s schedule, however. 2008 Kravis Prize Winner FAWE’s work to educate girls in Kenya might have the added benefit of saving lives, according to a new article from the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics. FAWE’s Kenya chapter sponsors over 100 girls and 250 teachers in Kenya’s Western and Nyanza provinces, where women have a high risk of exposure to reproductive and sexual health problems, including complications during pregnancy and childbirth, exposure to HIV/AIDS, forced marriages, and female genital mutilation. The particularly high risk among rural women can be attributed in large part to the lack of awareness and education on health issues in rural Kenya. That’s where FAWE’s work comes in. The organization will teach girls about “adolescent sexual and reproductive health rights” in an effort to change the harsh realities for women in rural Kenya. This agenda fits well into FAWE’s overall mission of empowering girls and women in Africa through gender-responsive education, which it has pursued for more than two decades. FAWE CEO Oley Dibba-Wadda will talk more about the organization’s extensive education programs in sub-Saharan Africa at the Kravis Prize “Global Leaders Forum” this Thursday at Claremont McKenna College. She will be joined by Pratham co-founder Madhav Chavan and Escuela Nueva founder Vicky Colbert to discuss issues of education in India, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa. Since founding the nonprofit educational organization Fundacion Escuela Nueva (FEN) 25 years ago to improve the quality and relevance of basic education in Colombia’s low-income schools, 2011 Kravis Prize winner Vicky Colbert has gained international acclaim as an educational innovator. The cornerstone of the world-renowned Escuela Nueva (“new school”) education model she co-authored is its Learning Guides – interactive tools that help children learn concepts through activities. As shown in this video, these educational tools promote collaborative learning and encourage reflection on the concepts being taught. 2011 Kravis Prize recipient, Vicky Colbert of Colombia, is a renowned innovator in the field of education. As the founder of Fundacion Escuela Nueva (FEN) and the co-author of the Escuela Nueva (or “new school”) model of education, Colbert has dedicated her life to improving the quality and relevance of basic education in schools that serve low- income students. Pearson Education, the world’s leading education company, recently launched a campaign to promote affordable learning, featuring Fundacion Escuela Nueva as a quality service provider in Colombia. In a case study on their website, Pearson Affordable Learning described the evolution of Escuela Nueva from a local initiative into a national policy in Colombia. According to Affordable Learning, this is “How it works”: In all programs, Fundación Escuela Nueva strives to improve the quality, efficiency and sustainability of rural and urban basic education, formal and informal. It does this by implementing the New School learning model which is cost effective, replicable and scalable. They work with students, teachers, educational administrators and communities to transform conventional schooling and the learning process. This is achieved through enhancing curriculum and classroom strategies through renovated teaching practices and experiential teacher training.
